Fatigue vs. the Moments of Clarity

This painting I am working on is doing weird things to me. Sometimes I curse the canvas and sometimes I am overjoyed with a sense of clarity and direction that becomes overwhelmingly apparent. I am always chasing that state. What is my ritual? That is what I need to figure out. How can I efficiently jump into this state of productivity, and remain there without distraction once this is achieved? Night after night I look for the answer to that question, and once I have this figured out believe me you will be the first to know. Regardless of all this nonsense, I am making real progress and will show this via photographs real soon.

Since I have no fancy new photos to show you of my own I will give you this monstrosity to behold. Check out this amazing new blacklight print by one of my favorite illustrators, GUNSHO (or James Quigley). Pretty much everything James does is drool-worthy and if you have a few bucks in the paypal account you should totally buy his print. Goblins & Mystics & Skeksis, Oh My!

I can watch The Dark Crystal and Labyrinth over and over because the design in those movies is so damn good. The man responsible for this is of course Brian Froud, and I find myself sketching the characters he creates from time to time.

I did a take on a scene from the Labyrinth where the goblins are in Jennifer Connelly’s character’s closet waiting for her to say the precise words needed to damn her little brother into slavery or whatever other terrible fate the Goblin King has in store for him.

I always wanted to make a print of that image so when I had the opportunity to participate in the “These are the Quotes from Our Favorite 80s Movies” group print show, I thought this was the perfect opportunity to do just that. The opening reception for this show will be Friday May 15th in conjunction with Salt Lake City’s monthly “gallery stroll” from 6 – 9 pm. at Signed & Numbered Gallery in Salt Lake City. 30 artists were asked to create a print based on a quote from an 80′s movie. I call this print “She’s Going To Say The Words.”

The “Lyrically Speaking” print show is opening today and tomorrow in conjunction with the 2009 Independent Record Store Day. My Black Sabbath inspired “Wizard” art print will be available at these shows.

Saturday, April 18, 2009 Size Records in Oklahoma City and 52.5 Records in Charleston, SC.

Speaking of Sabbath

This print I’m calling “Everyone’s Happy When the Wizard Walks By” will be showing at the “Lyrically Speaking” group print show that will run in conjunction with the 2009 Independent Record Store Day. Come out to the show’s opening reception on Saturday, April 18, 2009, 6 – 9 pm if you are close to one of the following locations.
-Signed & Numbered/Slowtrain Records in Salt Lake City
-Size Records in Oklahoma City
-52.5 Records in Charleston, SC.
All of the venues are small, independently owned stores and this is a chance to pick up some cool art, or at least check out the eye-candy while browsing for music. 38 artists were asked to create a print based on song lyrics. I went with Black Sabbath.
